ABOUT PROJECT
The project goal is to supplement existing knowledge of early modern charts of the Adriatic Sea based on the interdisciplinary approach (geographic, historiographic, geodetic and nautical) in order to advance research on nautical charts of the Adriatic Sea, and to evaluate cartographic sources as media of communicating in space and about space.
Expected scientific contributions:

-
The functional integration of scientists from different scientific areas and fields gathered around the same topic of research in order to establish a complementary approach to studying old charts.

-
The advancement of existing and creation of new scientific knowledge regarding early modern Adriatic Sea charts, in terms of respecting various approaches and methods applied in geographic, historiographic, geodetic and navigational research.

-
A critical reflection based on epistemological postulates and innovative theoretical and methodological paradigms in interdisciplinary sciences and their research implementation: systematisation, qualification and typology of early modern Adriatic Sea nautical charts with regard to map projection, scale, generalisation, diachronic order of depicted information, and toponymy.

-
Establishing the opportunities and limitations of applying quantitative methods to the study of old charts via geographic information systems and other computer programmes, and providing recommendations for improvement.

-
The deconstruction of old nautical charts as a reflection of the perspectives and perceptions, intentions and ambitions of their authors and/or those who commissioned them in the Adriatic Sea contact area as a front in European imperial policies and a contact area for political, economic and cultural permeations in the Adriatic Sea regions.

-
The inclusion and further education of a new scientist, a doctoral student, as part of the scientific research team.
